Welcome to the Skokie Site
Environmental Remediation Project
Nicor Gas and Commonwealth Edison (the Utilities) completed an environmental investigation in 2008 of the site of a former manufactured gas plant (MGP) facility in Skokie, Illinois.
The property is located at the southwest corner of Oakton Street and McCormick Boulevard in Skokie and is currently vacant and enclosed by a chain-link fence. The purpose of the site investigation was to determine the extent of the environmental impact resulting from the prior operation of the MGP site. The investigation was performed under a permit from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD, the current owner of the site), and in cooperation and coordination with the Village of Skokie and the Skokie Park District. Currently, the Utilities are evaluating the data collected from the investigation activities and preparing a remediation plan. In addition, the Utilities are planning to conduct additional investigation activities in the McCormick Boulevard parkway just east of the Skokie MGP site. This work is expected to take place in the 2nd quarter of 2011 and may take up to a month to complete.
The Utilities are providing this website as a means of keeping the community informed about environmental investigation and remediation activities at the Skokie MGP site.
